Marcos Coelho Benjamim, ‘Sem Título’, 2015, Simões de Assis Galeria de Arte

About Marcos Coelho Benjamim

With rhythmic geometry recalling topographical maps or waves, Marcos Coelho Benjamin’s wall-mounted works blur the line between painting and sculpture. Using tactile materials that range from rough sheets of industrial zinc and iron to acrylic paint and fabric, Benjamin builds three-dimensional compositions that belie the weight of their materials. Embellished with red, blue, and gold, each piece initially appears as a woven textile or painting; its material depth is revealed only upon closer inspection. The visual abundance found in Benjamin’s work reflects the popular culture, crafts, and resourcefulness of Minas Gerais, the mineral-rich state in Brazil where he is from.

Brazilian, b. 1952, Nanuque, Minas Gerais, Brazil, based in Belo Horizonte, Brazil
