Photographer Marcos López works in a style that has come to be known as Latino Pop, producing staged portraits in garish colors. Fusing the influences of Andy Warhol, Diego Rivera, and advertising imagery, López creates kitsch tableaux that satirize popular Latin American culture, often incorporating props. The image of Che Guevara recurs in his work; in one image, an actor appears in a mask of Che, wielding a plastic gun and posing in an artificial jungle environment. In Asado en Mendiolaza (Barbecue in Mendiolaza) (2001), López created his own image of the Last Supper just months before Argentina’s financial crisis struck in December 2001, a panorama that depicts friends and artists feasting at a barbecue. “I want my work to speak from the periphery, to express the texture of the subversive,” López has said of his work. “I try to give my work the pain and untidiness of Mestizo-America.”
