Following his degree in English at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Marcus Rees Roberts went on to study Film Theory at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he wrote his thesis on German Expressionist Cinema. He completed a second post-graduate course in printmaking at the Slade and in 1977 was awarded the Slade Prize and appointed assistant in printmaking. In 1980 he moved to Scotland to lecture at Edinburgh College of Art. In 1982 he was appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Central Florida and in 1989 as Head of Printmaking at Edinburgh College of Art, a post he held until 1995, when he returned to live and work in London.
Rees Roberts has exhibited in the UK and abroad. Venues include the Portland Art Museum, , Oregon, USA; University of Central Florida, Orlando, USA: Hodges Taylor Gallery, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; Steven Harris, New York; Edinburgh Printmakers, Scotland; Glasgow Print Studio, Scotland; Slade Gallery, London; The Strang Print Room at University College London; Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery; IEEB5, Bucharest, Romania. A recent exhibition held at Studio 3 Gallery at the University of Kent focused on recent short films from The Winter Journey series with related works in diverse media, including a 24-part drawing specially conceived for the gallery and a collection of paintings, prints and artist’s books.
His work is in a number of private and public collections including the British Museum; Victoria and Albert Museum; University College London; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Blackburn Museum; Scottish Arts Council; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester.
There is an expression in French to describe dusk: ‘entre chien et loup’. At the end of the day, in the dying of the light, it is hard to distinguish ‘between dog and wolf’ and objects take on an indeterminate menace in this state of perceptual ambiguity. This is the moment inhabited by the art of Marcus Rees Roberts. . .
