Introduced to the world as one in a group of young graffiti writers in the classic 1983 documentary “Style Wars,” Mare 139 (aka Carlos Rodriguez) has become one of the most remarkable individuals to ascend from the scene. Evolving past the streets, as well as aerosol and markers, Mare has become an accomplished sculptor, creating calligraphic forms in curved steel. Perhaps most notably, in 2012 Mare was named an official US State Cultural Ambassador, making him America’s first Ambassador of Graffiti.

The “Polished Style Writer” from 2011 is a prime example of Mare 139’s deft ability to take the stylized lettering seen in classic graffiti and transform it into a 3-dimensional object with fluidity, grace and strength. There is an obvious nod to Frank Stella, though it should be noted Stella himself found influence in the Wild Style graffiti of which Mare was a formative figure. —Courtesy of Doyle
