About Margo Ovcharenko

For Russian photographer Margo Ovcharenko, photography is a mode of storytelling. Her intimate photographs—often of young people she finds via social media—tell tales of the awkwardness of adolescence and of the collective experiences of sexual discovery, growing up, and the fear of being alone. Using soft, natural light, she photographs naked bodies in messy bedrooms or figures seemingly occupied by melancholia, as she attempts to capture her subjects in a state more real than posed. Like Flemish paintings and classical sculptures, her images have a certain sense of stillness. “I don’t want to transform the people to make them more or less attractive,” she has said. “I put the stress on light, color and silence.”
