Margo Selski, ‘The Sailor and The Desiring Soul’, 2017, RJD Gallery

Siren of sailors and desiring souls
Siren of spirits, fancies and melodica
Siren of and the bittersweet, of longing and hope
When a valuable experience or emotion such as desire or courage comes to mind, I like to stretch it and amplify the moment by fitting it to a visual narrative--an imaginary scenario that accentuates the emotion I wish to savor. The imagery allows me to not only revisit the heightened emotion but to anticipate a hopeful future in advance, while always being mindful that the outcome is a mystery. I can enjoy possibilities in advance, while poised to experience them when they do appear.
Courage to me isn't always loud and noticed by all in attendance. I believe that courage can be quiet, or a polite refusal or even an acceptance, it is taking a risk or bringing about a change. I believe that growth and maturity is brought about by courage. It is a willingness to be flawed and to make mistakes, a willingness to try over and over again. It is a willingness to resolve old problems and rid myself of old ideas that no longer work for me.

About Margo Selski

Using oil painting and encaustic, Margo Selski creates a vast universe where characters from her own imagined world meet visitors from fairy tales and children’s stories. Her dark palette and static compositions recall the portraiture of Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, while cracked surfaces—created by storing beeswax-covered works in the freezer—add a Renaissance-era patina and ghostly underpaintings slowly reveal themselves over time. The works, both intricately beautiful and eerily unsettling, take the viewer on an emotional journey as they discover the nuances hidden within them. “Seemingly simple allegories, my work reveals itself over time,” she says. “By using a safe and familiar composition, my goal is to lull the viewer into a false sense of comfort and familiarity, where they are drawn to images which, upon further viewing, become curious, uncomfortable and perhaps even dangerous."
