About Marianne Vitale

American artist Marianne Vitale is concerned with process of deterioration and the act of repurposing discarded materials. For example, in her recent sculptures—made from reclaimed lumber—her series entitled “Markers” (2011) is comprised of weathered wood headstones devoid of inscriptions or epitaphs, while in “False Fronts” (2011) Vitale reconstructs the facades of aged barns and outhouses. In both, the artist references the passage of time by virtue of the natural decomposition of her materials, often associated with the decaying monuments one might find littered throughout America’s ghost towns.
