About Markus Henttonen

Finnish photographer Markus Henttonen captures the relationship been ambivalent individuals and the urban environments that establish society’s social and behavioral codes. “The main idea is loneliness and alienation in an environment that seems to be perfect,” he says. “There’s a strong sense of melancholy, and they emphasize people’s smallness in relation to the massive building complexes, on the stage of everyday life.” In his best-known series, “Silent Night” (2012–), Henttonen photographed American homes in the Los Angeles area and their Christmas decorations. He points to the sinister glow and deep shadows that these lights create in spite of their domestic and seemingly peaceful surroundings.
