About Markus Oehlen

Markus Oehlen, brother of artist Albert Oehlen, was a former leader of Germany’s Neue Wilde movement, an anti-establishment group initially formed in the 1980s in opposition to avant-garde, Minimalist, and Conceptual art. The group, which also included the painter Martin Kippenberger, favored expressive painting with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes. Oehlen takes samples from punk and pop culture in his paintings, appropriating found imagery and employing a range of different techniques including silkscreen, photocopying, and printing. His images occupy a space between figuration and abstraction: forms shift in and out of focus in multilayered compositions, and pixel-like elements reference digital imagery. Oehlen is also an abstract sculptor and a musician.
