In a practice that spans photography, video, installation, and performance, Martine Gutierrez explores the nuances of gender, class, race, and her own Mayan heritage. The artist often places herself at the center of her work; in sleek, uncanny self-portraits reminiscent of magazine advertisements, she undercuts traditional notions of beauty. Gutierrez received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the FLAG Art Foundation, and the Hood Museum of Art, among other institutions. In 2019, she participated in the central pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale. Her work has also spilled outside the gallery space: In 2016, Gutierrez created a series of billboards around New York in a project called “#MartineJeans,” and in 2018, she produced a 124-page magazine called Indigenous Woman. Gutierrez has loaned her music to collaborations with fashion houses including Christian Dior, Acne Studios, and Saint Laurent.
