Martin Willing creates sculptures from brilliant titanium, chrome, aluminum, and steel to investigate geometry, space, and form. In the “Stretched Hyperboloid” (2004) series, Willing formed spiraled, coiled sheets of metal into elongated hourglass shapes. The thin sculptures look delicate and sensitive, appearing to push to the limits of structural stability. Willing describes his work as “simple, sovereign, the maximum that is technically permissible.” In addition to smaller pieces, Willing also makes large-scale public sculptures, including a 42-foot-tall hyperboloid commissioned for display in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 2005.
