“For me, color is concrete,” says Marylyn Dintenfass, referring to the rich colors that saturate her paintings, prints, works on paper, and installations. In her work, she merges abstraction with hints of figuration and subtle autobiographical references. Inspired by the world around her, she has built series based upon the sensuous shapes of cars and poisonous plants. Biomorphic forms recur throughout her compositions, especially open circles, which evoke such various references as doughnuts, candy rings, blood cells, interstellar matter, and puddles. For Dintenfass, art-making is a thrill akin to her hobbies of whitewater rafting and heli-hiking: “It is about experiencing exhilaration, a visceral sense of excitement and adrenalin. While these activities are clearly seen as challenging and dangerous, it is really quite like the thrill, anxiety, and fear I can feel when staring at a large white empty canvas.”
