Masahiro Tanaka, a Japanese professional baseball player, is the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees. He grew up in Hyogo, Japan and began his professional career in 2007 with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Nippon Professional Baseball's Pacific League. In 2014 he signed a seven-year contract worth $155 million with the New York Yankees, the fifth-largest deal ever given to a pitcher at the time. Tanaka was selected as a reserve for the American League’s All-Star Team during his rookie season, and has been the Opening Day starting pitcher for the Yankees for three years running. In the 2017 postseason, he earned the win against the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the 2017 American League series.
