Federica Sala on Italy, Identity, and New Possibilities for Design
Working between conceptual projects and practical products, Matali Crasset consistently pushes the limits of design. Following her schooling, Crasset began a five-year tenure working with Philippe Starck, before opening her own design studio. “My approach is still to research new typologies which also address the fundamental needs of mobility, freedom, and to enable people to use objects and spaces in their own way,” Crasset has said. Her approach is typified in one of her earlier designs Quand Jim monte à Paris, a roll-up felt pad with a built-in alarm clock and lamp that stylishly reimagines the possibilities and form of temporary bedding.
