About Matt Calderwood

Matt Calderwood pushes everyday objects to extremes, highlighting the extraordinary strength, functionality, and poetry of the most humble items. His eclectic output includes videos of perilous actions, like jumping on a slab of concrete held up by four wineglasses, and sculptures whose stability relies upon friction or exquisitely precise counterbalance. By forcing objects to perform such variously difficult functions, Calderwood personifies them: “It’s possible to feel sympathy for a box of screws under the right conditions,” he says. “It’s possible to see emotions in objects.”
