Matt Lambert's 'Free Advice' interestingly addresses the ways in which mental health is often acknowledged and disregarded within society. Although we now make a greater effort to be more conscious of those suffering from mental health issues, there is still a sense of stigma associated with it. Saying to someone who is suffering, “it's all in your head,” suggests obnoxious behaviour that often leaves the recipient of such comments feeling belittled and alone. Works like these hold a poignant message for all those experiencing issues, reminding them that others have also been given the same “advice,” which has alienated them. In this way, this work builds upon a sense of community, reminding others that they should not feel alone.
“Parenthood has had a significant impact on my work and has had an influence over my themes. The Building Blocks Series is inspired by the things I have to stop myself saying to my three-year-old. Phrases like “there there, don’t cry” and “go away and think about what you’ve done” are common phrases that will be familiar to many, and which seem pretty innocent. However, I see the former as an instruction to learn to suppress your emotions and the latter an invitation to become a world class ruminator! Of course, not everyone infers these meanings but I guess these pieces are a light-hearted way to reflect on how my own character has developed over time.” — Matt Lambert
