Lambert's title 'Ruminator', which is completely in keeping with the message provided on the work, suggests a profound sense of reflective thinking that is ordered to be done when one is in the wrong. Set against a black background, the white and pink text stands out, adding an abrasive element to the meaning. It evokes a feeling of being unable to escape, and having to face up to the direct consequences.
“Parenthood has had a significant impact on my work and has had an influence over my themes. The Building Blocks Series is inspired by the things I have to stop myself saying to my three-year-old. Phrases like “there there, don’t cry” and “go away and think about what you’ve done” are common phrases that will be familiar to many, and which seem pretty innocent. However, I see the former as an instruction to learn to suppress your emotions and the latter an invitation to become a world class ruminator! Of course, not everyone infers these meanings but I guess these pieces are a light-hearted way to reflect on how my own character has developed over time.” — Matt Lambert
