Matthew Moore is the fourth—and likely last—generation to work his family’s Arizona farm. With a nod to Land Art, the artist creates site-specific earthworks that explore agriculture’s role in a global economy, while raising consumer awareness of how food makes its way from farm to table, through projects like time-lapse videos that he places in supermarkets. “As a farmer and an artist, I display the realities of this transition in order to rationalize and document my displacement from the land on which I was raised,” Moore says. As his family’s land gives way to quickly encroaching suburbia, the artist draws attention to the similar ecological impacts of commercial agriculture and development in works like Rotations: Moore Estates, in which he used the blueprints for a planned community to recreate the project at one-third scale in sorghum and wheat.
