Estimate: $4,200. A commercial painter of houses as well as a mural artist, Matthew Willey paints compositions that explore a range of subject matter—from a tree painted in the stairwell space of a client’s home, to a powder room decorated with images of Queen Elizabeth and her Welsh corgis. His paintings tackle “the big questions common to all human spirits,” as he says.

About Matthew Willey

Muralist Matthew Willey paints large-scale compositions in an illusionistic trompe l’oeil style. His mural commissions range in subject matter from a tree painted in the stairwell space of a client’s home, to a powder room decorated with images of Queen Elizabeth and her Welsh corgis. His paintings tackle “the big questions common to all human spirits,” as he describes it. In Uproar with Strings, he depicts a restrained lion roaring on his hind legs, alluding to frustrations with the physical limitations of the human body. This same image was also recreated on an egg for the 2014 Faberge Big Egg Hunt, in New York.
