About Matts Leiderstam
In his installation-based works, Matts Leiderstam investigates the mysteries and veiled narratives that populate paintings across art history. Leiderstam recreates historic artworks in exacting detail, allowing viewers to home in on specific details. Magnifying technologies, catalogues, and other materials, such as easels, reframe paintings previously frozen in a canonical history. In his recreations of paintings by Old Masters, Leiderstam draws out or superimposes homoerotic details or other suppressed qualities, offering a wholesale revision of the artists and their works by attending to anatomical nuances, minor gestures, and other immaterial details.
