Max Weber
Russian-American, 1881–1961
Follow

While known as a pioneer of cubism in America, Max Weber explored many styles in his work, including Fauvism, Expressionism, and abstraction. His earlier works walk the line between figurative and abstract, with heavy strokes and broken lines, revealing the influence of a range of European artists—from Cézanne and Matisse to Picasso and Braque—as well as early American modernism. Weber described his process as painting with his “consciousness”, and later he would focus solely on Jewish and Eastern European themes, per his origins, exploring them through a more expressionistic style.
