Maynard Monrow text-based works are unassuming at first; his primary medium of plastic pre-fabricated letters inserted on felt sign boards are most commonly seen displaying a cafe menu or directional signage in an old motel. Monroe subverts this quotidien object to share haiku-like poems that offer comical, ironic, and critical musings. Telling instead of showing, Monrow’s textual works abstract and elevate language, asking viewers to engage with them as works of conceptual art.
