About Mel Davis

Interested in painting’s possibilities rather than its history, Mel Davis explores the fundamental properties of the medium through works that range from monochromatic canvases to allover gestures featuring representational elements drawn from nature. The Berkeley-based artist’s style has undergone subtle shifts over time, incorporating techniques inspired by a range of art historical movements. Davis has remained dedicated to basic principles of space, color, and mark-making throughout her career, however, often testing the boundaries of these techniques by incorporating stark, solid fields of color that mischievously interact with comparatively fluid and gestural markings.
