The human skeleton makes up 12% of a person’s overall body weight. Using this as a premise for her work, Melissa Guevara collected an amount of white volcanic sand, a substance making up most of the earth in El Salvador, that would be the same weight as the bones that make up her body. The white powdery earth is displayed in a sealed box, perhaps reminiscent of a coffin, reminding us that the human body is mortal.
