About Mert and Marcus

Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott are photographers credited with injecting glamour back into fashion photography at the turn of the 21st century. Influenced by photographer Guy Bourdin and glamorous figures like Madonna, the duo is known for images of powerful women, or “women with a meaning,” as Mert has said. Their extensive use of digital enhancement and other post-production techniques lends their images a purposeful artificiality. “It’s like a painting,” Mert says. “You can paint a scene. The next day, you think, I wish I had a dog. So you draw a dog on it. You can achieve what you want eventually, even if you didn’t do it that way. You seem freer than when ‘what you shot is what you got.’”
