Mi Ju
Korean, b. 1983
Follow

In her all-consuming, mixed-media paintings and installations, and her delicate drawings and photographs, Mi Ju forges together numerous oppositions: dreams and reality; ancient and contemporary; East and West; earthly and spiritual—into capacious, bug-eyed deities containing them all. She focuses primarily on painting, producing massively scaled, lushly colored compositions, whose cartoonish god and goddess figures are formed out of an accumulation of meticulously detailed individual elements. In Food Zoo (2013), for example, massing bits of food coalesce into a venerable lion. Mi draws upon her Korean heritage to create these cosmic-earthly visions, which recall indigenous deities. Though she describes herself as an “inheritor” of the multitude of conflicts shaping the Korean Peninsula, her works are all optimism, as she describes: “It is my hope that these images…will become emblematic of states of optimism.”
