Michael Canning, ‘Listening Love’, 2013-2017, Waterhouse & Dodd

About Michael Canning

Michael Canning’s ethereal oil paintings are both rooted in a specific place and infused with a dreamlike ambiguity. Working out of his West Ireland studio, which is filled with dried plants and bordered by rolling hills, the artist is equally inspired by his immediate surroundings and the memories and associations this environment evokes. The artist paints botanicals amid their surrounding landscapes, often placing flora in the foreground of his compositions, either floating or rooted in black bases, furthering the allegorical quality of his scenes.
