About Michael Light

In his photography, Michael Light expresses a deeply human interest and awe at the technological developments of the Cold War era. Light was hired by NASA in the late 1960s to develop photography techniques for the Apollo missions, yielding images of both great scientific value and reverential allusion to the history of landscape imagery. Works such as Command module Charlie Brown (1969/1999) and Aldrin’s boot print, Apollo 11 (1969/1999) marvel at the technological accomplishments of the 20th century, while illustrating the smallness of mankind in the context of outer space. As Light explains, “Photographs give me an analog to my physical movement through space, sometimes more interesting than the actual experience.” He raises these images beyond simple analytic study to sophisticated aesthetic objects.
