About Michael Lin

On the subject of his own practice, multimedia and installation artist Michael Lin once explained: “I’m not an expressionist. I’m trying to bring about a collective work.” Many of his major works have involved the creation or transformation of a collective or public space. These include a bed he placed inside the Helsinki’s Kiasma Museum for visitors to use; the coffee shop he opened in the Palais de Tokyo in Paris; and the skateboard ramp he erected inside MoMA PS1. He is also known to produce collaborative pieces with other artists, organizations, and art students. Lin’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by the decorative arts, and both traditional and vernacular Chinese imagery; a number of his installations make use of prints inspired by retro duvet covers the artist found in Shanghai.
