Recognized for her challenging and unusual portraits, photographer Michal Chelbin describes her imagery as “private and mythical,” seeking subjects with a “legendary quality [somewhere] between odd and ordinary.” Chelbin is known for depicting children and adolescents, revealing the universal awkwardness of growing up and establishing an intimate connection with her subjects, as in Paulina, Ukraine (2005). According to Chelbin, “the image is just the tip of the iceberg; it’s the gate to a story waiting to be told and which I try to depict in an appealing yet troubling way.”
