Brooklyn-based sculptor Michelle Lopez reinterprets and reclaims the visual language of minimalism in work that is imbued with social and political commentary. In “Blue Angels,” a series of massive crumpled mirrored-aluminum rectangles, she deflates the pomp and circumstance of the Navy’s famous flight demonstration squad while also undercutting the rigid, hyper-masculinity of work by John McCracken and other “finish fetish” artists. Other works hint at the aftermath of some unseen act of violence, such as Smoke Cloud, an installation of pieces of silver nitrate–covered architectural glass exposed to light so as to resemble bursts of smoke suspended in air.
