About Mickey Smith
If in recent centuries books have become the fossil records of society, Mickey Smith is the cultural archaeologist digging through our forgotten libraries. In her conceptual photographs of reference books, the artist finds links between text and form, like a series of red volumes with the carefully lettered title Blood, or volumes of magazines and journals with titles that become strangely evocative when removed from their context: Time, Life, Creation, Power. In addition to her book photos, she also creates abstract images of documents, such as records of Congressional sessions, as if she were making portraits of pure information. Books are also present in the images she appropriates of famous people stripped from their context, their faces cropped but often completely recognizable.
