About Mie Olise
Mie Olise, who holds a graduate degree in architecture and worked under the instruction of Zaha Hadid, describes herself as a “constructor, painter, and filmmaker.” She does not favor a single medium over the others, but rather lets each subject determine her approach. Olise’s works in painting, video, sculpture, and installation are informed by architecture and structures in the artist’s environment. (Olise said that she “builds” her paintings.) Her imagery is fantastical and improbable, but rendered with realism. The desertion and ruin of manmade spaces are common themes in her work; Pyramiden, an abandoned Soviet mining facility in Norway, has in particular recurred throughout her practice. In presenting her work, Olise often creates site-specific installations.
