Misaki Kawai’s absurdist, child-like paintings take their inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including Osaka’s comedy scene, 70s Japanese punk, handmade dolls, textiles, and mass produced objects. Thickly layered paintings are collages of these various influences, melded into bizarre and playful characters, that Kawai lets emerge as the paintings unfold. Kawai’s work has been shown at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; MoMA PS1, New York, NY; Rhiimaki Art Museum Finland; Malmo Konsthall,’ the Children’s Museum of Art in New York, NY; Institut Valencia d’Art Modern; and Museum of Modern Art, Toyama.
