With her provocative large-scale installations, Monica Bonvicini explores the links between sexuality and architecture, both challenging the male-dominated field and exposing the gendered quality of constructed spaces. Juxtaposing materials such as steel and glass with leather and rubber, Bonvicini’s works are at once thoughtful and cheeky—as seen in Leather Tools (2009), featuring mallets, axes, and other implements tightly encased in leather like fetishized objects. Bonvicini’s site-specific installations invite physical interaction by viewers, from Stairway to Hell (2003), a working staircase enveloped in hanging chains and shattered glass, to Don’t Miss a Sec (2004), the sleek chrome lavatory placed inside a cubicle made of two-way mirrors, enabling the user to see outside while remaining invisible in a busy area of London.
