About the work
Monika Baer
German, b. 1964
Follow

Monika Baer depicts surreal, indeterminate experiences and landscapes in paintings, drawings, watercolors, and collage. “Because my paintings often seem so extremely far apart from each other and of such different types, I think a lot about the way they are connected,” she says. “Actually I see them as the visible parts of a larger invisible work.” Baer blends figures from everyday objects, fantasies, and biomorphic forms with rapid abstract gestures, raw sections of canvas, hair, dust, and other studio detritus, formally exploring painting as a subject in itself.
