About Monique van Genderen

Monique van Genderen is preoccupied with surface quality and color, creating varying levels of reflection and transparency in her work through the use of various types of paint. Her vibrant abstract paintings have been compared to a range of practices, from Helen Frankenthaler’s Color Field paintings to Lorser Feitelson’s illusionistic designs. Drawing on modernist precedents and the aesthetic of contemporary graphic design, van Genderen creates a range of abstractions, from pours and color fields reminiscent of torn paper to expressionistic, almost calligraphic marks. She also creates large wall installations composed of pieces of textured adhesive.
