Mouneer Al-Shaarani, ‘Free Woman’, 2013, Meem Gallery

About Mouneer Al-Shaarani

Though his work is steeped in tradition, Mouneer Al Shaarani strives to bring the ancient tradition of Arabic lettering, in particular the once-hidden geometric style of Kufic writing, into a modern context. A former student of famed Syrian calligrapher Badawi Al Dirani, the Cairo-based artist is considered a master of the art form. He seeks perfection with each line in his gouache and acrylic works on paper, creating compositions that seem to emanate with patterns and brushstrokes. The artist hopes to free the form from its “golden order to find its prestigious place among the fine arts,” he has said.

Syrian, b. 1952, based in Syria & Egypt
