About Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib

In their collaborative video installations, Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib explore the effects of translating the images and forms of painting, sculpture, and photography into the language and conventions of digital video, animation, and computer art. Many of their works involve the superimposition of digital imagery onto photographic images, or the display of serialized images and text. The artists test the boundaries of narrative construction, and explore the confusion that can arise between representation and reality. As they explain, “Audiences...tend to bring a lot of expectations to video and moving-image art, simply by its ubiquity in contemporary culture and daily life—so we’re engaging viewers, to some extent, on different terms than artists working in other media.”
