About Nadira Husain

Nadira Husain’s intricately detailed tempera-on-canvas paintings feature kaleidoscopic arrangements that riff on traditions of Indian miniature painting and Kalamkari painting, a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile traditionally produced in parts of India and in Iran. She combines these influences with motifs from European and Eastern imagery and with abstract geometrical patterns. These large-format hybrid works forgo linear perspective in favor of non-hierarchical spatial structures, as picture and frame, high and low cultural references, and principal and ornamental figures interact on equal terms. Her work and approach also extend to three dimensions, as in her pieces composed of ceramic tiles and Indian powder paint.
