Nathan Coley's photos, drawings, videos, and public and gallery-based sculptures and installations investigate the social aspects of the built environment: how space is given meaning by communities and how these meanings and claims can conflict. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 2007, Coley is known for his re-creations of structures—such as a scale model of a Marks & Spencer department store in Manchester damaged by an IRA bomb, or religious buildings remade in striped painted cardboard—as well as text works that join scaffolding with illuminated words, as in his 2008 work Heaven Is a Place Where Nothing Ever Happens.
