About Nathan Lyons

Nathan Lyons is known for his honest and often questioning depictions of America’s cultural landscape. Engaging with the field of critical visual thinking, the artist creates sequences of black-and-white pictures, which he often mounts as diptychs. For Lyons, the strategic juxtaposition of images alters the meaning of the images themselves and creates an open-ended space for dialogue. The artist perceives the world as a vast repertoire of signs awaiting to be decrypted, and envisions a society where the written word is no longer dominant and people are constantly surrounded by an image-driven environment. Incorporating signage, graffiti, and advertisements, Lyon's works explore the use of language in imagery, create visual puns, and assess the American scene.
