Neanderthal, ‘Yellow, Red & Purple Jasper Tools’, ca. 80000 BCE, ArtAncient

A collection of yellow, red and purple jasper Mousterian tools from Fontmaure, central France. Dating to around 80,000 - 40,000 years ago.

These tactile pieces of semi precious stone were used to prepare animal hides and butcher meat. Tools made from this distinctive, richly coloured stone are only found in the Neanderthal site, Fontmaure.
