Nico Iliev, ‘Hangman’, 2002, The Watermill Center: Benefit Auction 2017

Nico Iliev is a Bulgarian-born and NYC-raised fine art and fashion photographer, having emerged from the East Village scene of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The piece is a part of a rarely shown series of personal work, consisting of portraits of intense characters he encountered in the streets of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn over the span of 20 years. Approaching his subjects with quiet voyeurism and empathy, he often captures moments of personal struggle and rebellion that are purging and cathartic. Craig Schamel, the subject in the work, is a performance artist, queer activist and a Doctor of Political Philosophy, currently residing in Germany.
