About Nicole Chesney

Nicole Chesney makes oil paintings on laminated glass panels, which she favors for their transparent quality and soft glow. In her particular process, Chesney etches the surface of the glass before applying paint, such that the surface catches variegated light depending on the viewer’s relative position to it. She finds that her medium is the most appropriate for her subjects—the sky and bodies of water, and the horizons where they meet. Though her works are referential, they appear abstract, sometimes with imperceptible shifts in hue and texture.
