Never formally trained as an artist, Nil Yalter creates photographs and videos that are grounded in her feminist politics, her respect for laborers, and her experience as a Turkish immigrant. Based in Paris since 1965, Yalter is influenced by the leftist ideologies of the 1968 revolution. In its pairing of photography and text, her work is indebted to documentary and Conceptual art. She crafts fictional narratives, often in the first person, that are realistic in their exploration of the experience of disenfranchised female laborers and frequently feature immigrants who assist wealthy families by cleaning their homes. Yalter’s work is also an important example of early video art and feminist performance art.
