Nja Mahdaoui, ‘Parchment 8’, 2005-2007, Meem Gallery

Tunisian artist Nja Mahdaoui is not only renowned as a contemporary master of arabic calligraphy, but also as an experimenter with calligraphic abstraction and pattern in drawing, sculpture, and architectural design (comparisons to Chinese artist Xu Bing come to mind). In this intricate ink drawing on animal-hide parchment, text-like markings swirl into pure pattern, while gold leaf ornamentation lends the work the feel of an abstracted scripture or manuscript.
