Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s dense, vibrant portraits layer images from fashion magazines, pictures of Nigerian pop stars, and samplings from the artist’s own family photo albums into intimate domestic scenes. Crosby was born in Nigeria and lived there until she was 16, at which point she moved to the United States; her experience of cultural hybridity remains a major theme in her work. Since receiving her MFA from Yale in 2011, Crosby has garnered widespread acclaim and exhibited at galleries in London, New York, and Los Angeles. A number of prestigious institutions have exhibited her work, including the Whitney Museum, MOCA Los Angeles, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2017, she became a MacArthur fellow.
