Created in 1906, the graceful porcelain figurine, “Stag Theo at Trunk,” was handcrafted by Theodor Kärner, one of the most celebrated German porcelain sculptors of the 20th century. Kärner was educated as a modeler at the Munich School for Applied Arts, and began his first position as a sculptor at the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory in 1905.
The stag’s graceful, mid-motion stance, size and realism tested the limits of what was possible in porcelain sculpture at the beginning of the 20th century. Made from white biscuit, Kärner’s attention to detail brings the stag to life and honors the German cultural ideology of nature, informing their appreciation of animals.
