With his large-scale oil-on-canvas paintings, Oscar Oiwa engulfs viewers in sublime and terrifying images of the natural and manmade world on the brink of calamity. His compositions—of heaving seas, cityscapes threatened by natural or manmade events, or landscapes hiding supernatural beings—are so full of detail and color that they edge towards abstraction. A citizen of the world, having lived in São Paulo, Tokyo, London, and New York, Oiwa is keenly attuned to globalization and man’s increasing encroachment into nature. These concerns drive his art, as does his admiration for such Japanese ukiyo-e masters as Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai and the energy in their exquisitely wrought prints. In his own forceful works, Oiwa offers a bird’s-eye view of the vivid scenes he portrays, as if to provide a safe distance from events that are happening all around us.
